In What Order Should I Use My Skincare?

Investing in a skincare routine targeted towards your specific skin type is the best thing you can do to help your skin look its most beautiful best. With so many skincare products available, and many new products coming to the market so frequently, it can sometimes be overwhelming to know which products to use and in what order you should use them. To help you suss it all out, we’ve created this handy guide to help!

Why is it important to use your skincare in a specific order?

It’s important to apply your skincare in the right order to ensure that any active ingredients can work their magic by effectively penetrating into your skin.

In What Order Should I Use My Skincare?

When you establish a robust morning and evening skincare routine, you can target multiple concerns at once through layering. It is recommended that you apply your skincare, starting with the thinnest consistency first and working up to the skincare with the thicker consistencies. This is because cream products work as a protective barrier for your skin, while serums work by penetrating ingredients into your skin.

Step 1: Cleanse your face (AM & PM)

Using a cleanser targeted towards your specific skin type or skin concern will help to eradicate excess oil, remove stubborn makeup and brighten your complexion. There are many cleansers available in a range of different formulations from oils, to waters, to gels and creams. In the evening, you may want to adopt a double cleansing routine, whereby you use a cleansing oil first before moving on to your regular cleanser.

Step 2: Use a toner (AM & PM)

If you like using a facial toner, step 2 is the time to use one! Long gone are the days whereby toners were very harsh and potentially aggravating to your skin. Modern formulas are much more gentle and help to remove impurities from your skin whilst brightening your visage and tightening your pores.

Step 3: Apply a serum (AM & PM)

Treat your skin to the prowess of a serum targeted specifically towards your skin type or skin concern. Many serums contain powerful ingredients to help treat blemishes, soothe irritation and assist with alleviating the signs of ageing including fine lines and wrinkles. Look for serums that include multi-beneficial ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, ceramides and more.

Step 3: Apply treatments such as exfoliators, masks or peels (PM only)

Incorporate any targeted skincare treatments into your night-time routine only so they can get to work while you sleep. These may include retinol treatments or exfoliating peel pads or masks. We advise using these sparingly, 2-3 times a week while you build up a tolerance and if you experience any irritation stop using them immediately. Be sure to check the instructions on each individual product to make sure you are layering products that work well together.

Step 4: Use an eye cream (AM & PM)

The skin around your eyes is very delicate and thin, and therefore shows signs of fatigue and ageing much more quickly. Use an eye cream by gently patting the cream around your under-eyes and eyelids.

Step 5: Apply a targeted spot treatment (PM)

Spot treatments are best applied at night time when your skin and body is repairing. Apply your spot treatment before you apply your moisturiser to ensure the active ingredients can penetrate through your skin without a barrier. SHOP SPOT TREATMENTS

Step 6: Moisturise!

Don’t skip moisturiser, even if you feel your skin wouldn’t benefit from it. There are plenty of moisturisers out there that will work with your skin type. Moisturisers provide intensive hydration, help to lock in your skincare and protect your skin from environmental aggressors such as the sun and harsh weather. If you have acne-prone skin, be sure to check the moisturiser is formulated especially for acne and blemish-prone skin and contains non-comedogenic ingredients.

Step 7: Use an SPF (AM only)

It is very important to protect your skin from environmental aggressors such as the harmful rays of the sun. Choose an SPF and apply liberally around your face, neck and decolletage. Sun damage can cause premature ageing as well as sunspots and pigmentation.
