We've consulted with the British Beauty Council's top dermatologists to provide you with expert insights on what causes dark circles and which key ingredients you should look for in your eye care products.

What causes dark circles under the eyes?

"There are several causes of dark circles such as genetics, dehydration, visible blood vessels under the skin, lack of sleep, sun exposure and age. The eye area has limited blood flow and is the only area of the face that doesn't contain sebaceous glands, which produce sebum (oil) that keeps the skin supple, hydrated and plump." - Melanie Grant

"Dark circles under the eyes can be caused by a number of factors including genetics, ageing lifestyle factors (eg smoking), UV damage, skin conditions such as eczema and hyperpigmentation. Additionally seasonal allergies can cause congestion which compromises blood and lymphatic circulation. The resultant puffiness can make dark circles more prominent. With age and UV damage, skin thinning and loss of the fat pad below the eye contributes to a sunken appearance, enhancing the appearance of dark circles." - Dr. Sharon Wong

"Dark circles aren't just about lack of sleep—they can also be linked to genetics, allergies, dry skin or even using the wrong products." - Dr. Ifeoma Ejikeme

What key ingredients should be incorporated to help with dark circles?

"In terms of ingredients, I always look for formulas that promote microcirculation, build skin density and provide immediate and lasting hydration to quench and plump the eye contour. I love niacinamide, caffeine and horse chestnut to encourage blood flow and brighten and awaken the eyes, a slow-release retinol to promote collagen synthesis and peptides and hyaluronic acid to hydrate. Aloe and cucumber extracts offer a calming antidote in times of puffiness or irritation. Vitamin C energises and lifts signs of fatigue under the eyes." - Melanie Grant

"Focus on eye creams which emphasise hydration and moisturisation with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides. Vitamin C as an anti-oxidant and as a key component to building collagen, in addition to caffeine to reduce puffiness are also helpful ingredients in eye creams. If hyperpigmentation is the cause of the dark circles then skin brightening actives such as niacinamide, azaleic acid, alpha arbutin and retinols can help to reduce the discoloration." - Dr. Sharon Wong

"If your under-eye area appears bluish or purple, look for products with caffeine to help constrict blood vessels. For pigmentation-related circles, vitamin C, arbutin or retinol can gradually brighten and smooth the skin." - Dr. Ifeoma Ejikeme
