The best backstage beauty tips from New York Fashion Week

From intricate makeup designs, to beautifully dewy skin, Fashion Week is the place to discover the trending makeup looks that are taking over the beauty scene. With some of the world's top makeup artists coming together backstage to create incredible, and in some cases, era-defining styles, everyone who's anyone in the beauty industry will be looking to Fashion Week for their latest trend inspo.

Want a VIP insight into the backstage beauty suite? We caught up with Cherelle Lazarus (@cherellelazarus), national senior makeup artist at NARS Cosmetics, to hear her top tips from New York Fashion Week.

Always prep your skin

NARS Light Reflecting Multi Action Treatment Lotion is the holy grail to getting that smooth texture to the skin, whilst giving the skin hydration and a radiant glow! Your chosen base product will glide on to the skin effortlessly after using this product. I saturate a cotton pad and apply in a circular motion to gently remove any dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. - I use this on all Fashion week shows, its my number one staple product because of the way it boosts skin’s clarity whilst infusing intense moisture and minerals.

Use tinted moisturiser for a natural glow

To create that no makeup, makeup look, its important to know what skin texture you are ultimately trying to recreate and the steps you will take to get there.

Usually it takes a mix of different textures that speaks to the models skin concerns to achieve the look that you are recreating for the runway. NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser is a great edition to your kit as it offers a good coverage that still allows skin to look like skin.

Apply using your hands because the warmth of your hands activates the tinted moisturiser to spread and blend onto the skin with ease. I like to start from the centre of the face and blend out towards my jaw-line for a skin like finish. This is a technique I use every season to create skin that looks like skin.

Setting powder is your best friend

A kit essential, powder can be used for various reasons. Although most commonly used to set your face makeup, this staple product is needed even when creating a dewy, wet looking skin.

It’s essential to use powder in the areas that will add dimension to the face, it can also be used to add texture. NARS Light Reflecting Setting Powder is a weightless formula which enhances the look and wear of your foundation. It also has a Photochromic technology that diffuses light, meaning there is NO FLASHBACK and your skin will look perfected in any lighting situation! This is great for fashion week, as you never know what the lighting situation going to be.

There's more than one way to use concealer

Having gorgeous skin with no imperfections is pretty unrealistic. So it's important to have a mix of different concealing products within your backstage kit. The one I use the most for radiant skin is Radiant Creamy Concealer, aka my desert island product.

I couldn’t do fashion week without it! It covers, colour corrects, minimises fine lines and pores and generally smooths the skin when applied. I love mixing it to make foundation shades lighter or darker, and it’s a great product to add warmth or contour with (I love a multi-use product!)

For a lighter coverage and to perfect the skin after foundation application, use your fingers to stipple the product into the skin. For a fuller coverage, use the NARS Blending Brush to create a flawless airbrush finish.

For precision work on blemishes, try using the NARS Multi-Use Precision Brush. Apply concealer directly to the blemish and use the brush to soften the corners for concise results. The key is to only apply coverage where the skin needs it.

As someone with an affinity for all things beauty, discovering fantastic new products is my not-so-secret obsession. Over the years I've tried and tested a mountains worth of creams, serums and cleansers, finding some of my favourite 'holy-grail' products along the way. However, I'm always on the lookout for more ways to nourish my hair, perfect my dewy base, or enhance my skincare routine. Working as a beauty blogger for over 3 years, I've been lucky enough to collaborate personally with lots of amazing beauty brands including Christian Dior, The Body Shop and Dermalogica. I've used the Dermalogica special cleansing gel religiously since I first got it and their products are some of my ultimate skincare faves. When it comes to cosmetics, NARS Sheer Glow foundation is definitely my go-to - I live for a light, glowy base!
