The Ordinary Retinol & Retinoid Range

The next generation counterpart to retinol, retinoids feature an alternative retinoid molecule, offering improved resurfacing and rejuvenating benefits while minimising the risk of irritation associated with traditional retinol use.

With multiple textures to choose from, The Ordinary’s retinoid library offers a range of formulas to suit all skin types. The active ingredient is suspended in either squalene or emulsion, with two concentration levels. Shop now and discover the anti-ageing and texture-smoothing benefits of the brand’s retinoid products.

Which retinoids does The Ordinary sell?

The Ordinary offers two silicone-free, alcohol-free and cruelty-free retinoid formulas to suit different skincare needs. The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane features a hydrating oil texture, incorporating stable squalene to help reinforce the skin’s moisture barrier. With little to no irritation risk, this formula is suitable for use all over the face. The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane is a high-strength retinol with an oil texture while The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion is a moderate-strength retinoid with a lightweight creamy serum texture.

What are the different percentages in The Ordinary retinol and retinoids?

The Ordinary offers varying concentrations in their retinol and retinoid lines. Higher concentrations offer increased active ingredient potency and are ideal for those who are already experienced with using retinols and retinoids. For those who are new to vitamin A derivatives and looking to incorporate these products into their skincare routine, it is best to start with lower concentrations to gradually build the skin’s tolerance and minimise the risk of irritation.

What’s the difference between retinol and retinoids?

Widely regarded for its anti-ageing and texture-refining benefits, retinol is has been a staple skincare ingredient for decades. With advanced active complex, retinoids offer many of the same benefits with a higher tolerance, hailed as the next-generation of vitamin A derivatives. The Ordinary’s efficacious formulas offer a range of products to suit all skin types. More sensitive skin types and those new to retinols and retinoids should start with low strength retinols or retinoids to minimise the risk of irritation. The brand’s Granactive Retinoid combines a delivery system and active ingredient, hydroxypinacolone retinoate, a retinoic acid ester.

When do I need to use The Ordinary retinol?

Retinols and retinoids are a staple in any anti-ageing skincare routine; however, that’s not to say that you can’t use them in your 20’s and 30’s. The active ingredients work to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but also help to combat textural irregularities such as scarring and blemishes.

What skincare ingredients can’t I combine with retinols and retinoids?

To minimise the risk of irritation or reactivity, The Ordinary recommends that retinol products shouldn’t be combined with direct vitamin C, copper peptides, or direct acids (AHAs and BHAS). Avoid combining multiple retinol and retinoid products at once and introduce the ingredients into your skincare routine gradually over time to build tolerance.

How long does The Ordinary retinol last?

The Ordinary retinoids have a shelf life of 12 months after being opened. Consult the period after opening (PAO) symbol on the product packaging for the individual product shelf life. To best maintain the freshness and efficacy of the products, we recommend storing your skincare in the fridge.
