The Ordinary’s Retinol Serum 1% in Squalane is a water-free, multi-purpose solution formulated to reduce the appearance of pores, dark spots and fine lines, and improve the overall appearance of skin’s texture.
Enriched with a 1% concentration of the anti-ageing powerhouse retinol, which is a derivative of vitamin A, the lightweight serum delivers visible plumping and firming effects to your skin. Another key antioxidant ingredient, squalane, protects against UV damage and helps to minimise the risk of sun-induced age spots, leaving you with a more even-looking skin tone.

- When to Use: After water-based serums but before heavier treatments.
- Application: Apply a small amount to the face as part of your evening skincare regimen. Do not use with other retinoid treatments. Avoid unprotected solar exposure. Store in a cool, dry place.
- Please note: Retinoids can make the skin more sensitive to UV radiation. Sun protection is particularly important when using retinoids. This product must not be used in conjunction with other retinoids including retinol or retinoic acid. This product is not a treatment for acne. Acne-prone skin may experience a temporary increase in acne during the first few weeks of using any form of retinoid including those used in this formulation.

Unable to tolerate
My skin can’t tolerate 1% retinol and this is the only reason for the 4 stars! Any retinoids need to be gradually introduced and I’d recommend starting low and slow to prevent side effects and damaging your skin unintentionally. A little goes a long way, use plenty of moisturiser after use and don’t apply to eyes nose or mouth, you will regret this as skin can get sore.

Levelling up
I was originally using the 0.5% and decided to move onto the 1%. Retinol hasn't so far caused any irritation for me, but I still want to be gentle with my skin. The squalane is of course oily so it takes a while to absorb. I recommend making sure the previous product has fully absorbed before applying for smoother application. I'm definitely still a fan.

4* instead of 5* because I'm honestly not even sure if there are any benefits. I'm 28 and don't have many fine lines and next to no wrinkles but I use spf and technically still young. But continue to use as it doesnt cause any harm. The squalane makes it nice and hydrating instead of drying which is good.

Between the different grades ,you can start on a lower percentage and work your way up. The retinol is lightweight and applies almost like a face oil. A little really goes a long way but like with all Ordinary products, this is soo effective. Noticed my skin is brighter, less pigmentation and just feeling youthful with consistent use of this in my routine. In my experience, this feels like a better yet more affordable retinol that a few on the market. Highly recommend!!
